A Russian AN-12 plane carrying around nine tons of gold worth $378m (€306m) hit problems during take-off in Yakutsk on Thursday, scattering chunks of its precious cargo over the icy Yakutia terrain.

The Nimbus Airlines cargo plane was en route to Krasnoyarsk when its hold broke down, throwing gold nuggets all over the runway. After spotting the leakage, the pilots landed the plane in a nearby airport some 26 kilometres (16 miles) from Yakutsk.
